No. 3 Vikings off to hot start

Jasper’s volleyball team has picked up where Walker left off.

The Lady Vikings swept a pair of matches in dominating fashion in their first ever tri-match at Carl Cannon Coliseum on Tuesday.

Coming off a State Volleyball Tournament appearance last season, coach Bobby Daniels’ squad took down Gardendale (25-12, 25-10, 25-9) before routing Carver (25-9, 25-14, 25-4).

Jasper (7-0) opened the season by winning the Albertville Invitational Tournament on Saturday, going a perfect 5-0.

“We are off to a good start, but we’ve still got a lot of room for improvement,” Daniels said. “I’m excited about the season. I’m excited about where this team can go. We just have to keep improving.”

Jasper brings back a veteran, albeit young, lineup. There are just three upperclassmen on the team. Tiffany Hackett is the lone senior while Abby Trotter and Cordova transfer Morgan McClendon are juniors.

The team is heavy with sophomores including Mckinley Ferguson, Temperance Chatman and Khloe Kimbrell.

“At this point, I like our athleticism. I like how hard they are working,” Daniels added. “We’ve got some good pieces, we just have to make it all work together.

Jasper dropped its opener in the Class 6A state tournament last year, falling to Daphne in five sets. The Vikings dropped the first two sets (25-19, 25-21) before winning the next two (25-23, 25-10) to force a decisive fifth set, which Daphne won 16-14.

Jasper returns to the court on Thursday with a tri-match against Ramsay and Pelham at Ramsay High School.
