Jasper High School’s girls won two events and had a host of top finishes to take runner up in the Class 5A, Section 3 Track Meet at James Clemens High School over the weekend.

Jasper High girls finish second at section meet

Jasper High School’s girls won two events and had a host of top finishes to take runner up in the Class 5A, Section 3 Track Meet at James Clemens High School over the weekend.

Relay teams led the way for the Jasper girls, who finished with 95 points. The Lady Vikings won the 4x800-meter relay event with both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams taking second.

All three relay teams qualified for the Class 5A State Track Meet at Gulf Shores Friday and Saturday.

Jasper’s girls shined at the section meet — where the top eight finishers earn points. The top five section competitors in every event, as well as wild cards who meet the state requirements, advance to the State Track Meet.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Anna Mobley, Carlee Muncher, McKennna Lewis and Maci Beaty placed first at the section and have the top 5A time heading into the state meet.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Temperance Chatman, Alex Oliver, Kelsey Shelton and Jurni Cummings took second place as did the 4x400-meter relay team of Beaty, Muncher, Oliver and Cummings.

In individual events, Morgan McClendon took first place in the javelin and was fourth in the high jump.

McKinley Ferguson finished fourth or higher in four different events, racking up points for Jasper. She tied for second in the high jump, placed third in both the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump and was fourth in the long jump. Oliver also finished tied for second in the high jump.

Beaty took second in the 800-meter run and was eighth in the 400-meter run, Anna Mobley was fourth in the 1600-meter run and sixth in the 800-meter run and McKennna Lewis was seventh in the 800-meter run.

Jasper’s boys placed fifth at the section, led by two second-place relay teams.

The 4x400-relay team of Hudson Freeman, Ronnie Holiday, Sam Howton and Hayden Yerby took second as did the 4x800-meter relay team of Ryan Mobley, Dayton Talley, Freeman and Yerby.

Yerby also took third in the 400-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter run and Freeman was seventh in the 400.

Curry High girls place fifth at section

Curry’s Kayla Sargent took home two first-place finishes at the Class 4A Section 3 Track Meet held over the weekend at Winfield High School.

Sargent qualified for four individual events at the State Track Meet set for Gulf Shores on Friday and Saturday. She took first place in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, placed third in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.

At the sectional, Curry finished fifth overall with 66 points, marking the highest finish in school history.

Also for the Yellow Jackets at the section, Abbey Moon took first place in the javelin and sixth in the discus — qualifying for the state meet in both events. Other state qualifiers were Alayna Key in the long jump, Addi Aaron in the 1600-meter run and the Martin Martinez, who placed third in the discus and fourth in the shot put on the boys side.

Also in 4A, Cordova's Aiden Gay took fourth in the 100-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles while Ginny Posey placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.

Carbon Hill teams finish in top 6

Carbon Hill’s boys took fifth place in the 3A meet at Winfield.

David Barr led the Bulldogs, taking first in the high jump, second in the long jump and third in the 110-meter hurdles. He will compete in all three events at the 1A-3A State Track Meet at Cullman High School. Jev Windham placed sixth in the shot put, qualifying for state. The 4x100 relay team of Windham, Duane Humanes, Carson McGinnis and Calijha Cook placed third.

The Carbon Hill girls took fifth, led by Elizabeth Tucker. She was second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in both the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump. The other state qualifier for the girls was Miracle Thompson with a fourth-place finish in the shot put.

For Oakman’s boys, Brody Harbison was sixth in the 800-meter run and Ta’Darius Thomas placed eight in the shot put.
