OAKMAN — The City of Jasper is helping Oakman bring holiday cheer this season with a generous donation of Christmas lights.

Jasper Mayor David O’Mary said the city recently gave Oakman some retired Christmas lights to be placed on poles throughout Oakman’s downtown district.

“The mayor of Oakman came to me and asked me if we had any Christmas decorations we were not using, and I inquired to our street department superintendent and learned that we did have a fairly good supply of Christmas lights that we have not used in several years,” O’Mary said. “Some of them needed some repair, such as wiring, new bulbs and that sort of thing.”

Oakman Town Clerk Lisa Lockhart said everyone at town hall has been working to make necessary repairs to the lights, and preparations have already been made to place the lights on poles in Oakman.

She said they estimate just over 30 lights will be displayed.

O’Mary said this isn’t the first time the City of Jasper has helped another municipality.

“What I have seen since I’ve been in office is we had an automobile in our police department that the Town of Sipsey made an inquiry about, and we were able to give that to the Town of Sipsey,” he said. “I think we have given a truck to Carbon Hill. We always stand ready to help our neighboring cities, within the boundaries of what we can do. We’re pleased to be able to have that opportunity.”

Oakman Mayor Cory Franks said he is grateful to the City of Jasper for their help, and he hopes the lights are something the citizens of Oakman can take pride in during the holiday season.

“I would like to thank Mayor O’Mary and the Jasper City Council for their generosity,” Franks said. “If you come through Oakman in the coming weeks, you’ll notice Christmas lighting on our poles, thanks to the City of Jasper. That gesture of support is what it takes for our county, as a whole, to be successful. We must all support each other and help meet the needs of every community, if we are able to do so.”

O’Mary added, ”We stand ready to help our neighboring cities in any way that we can. We all make up Walker County.”

The new lights will particularly provide a festive, colorful backdrop for Oakman’s Christmas parade, scheduled for Dec. 8 at 6 p.m.

Those interested in entering floats, cars, trucks or another holiday display for the parade are urged to call Oakman Town Hall at (205) 622-3232.

Lockhart said they also hope to host a community tree lighting in Oakman, which will be set at a later date.
