James “Jim” Delano Nielsen, 72, of Calera, born in Stoughton, Wis., and raised in Brooklyn, Wis., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017.

A visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, from 1 until 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the First United Methodist Church in Alabaster.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary at the First United Methodist Church.

Jim graduated from Evansville High School and furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his mining career in Hoyt Lakes, Minn., and continued his career in Gillette, Wyo., Marion Ill., Jasper, Ala., and Grants, N.M. Along his many stops, he and his family enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling, golfing, hunting, fishing, boating, and spending time together. He retired from mining in 2008. After retiring he enjoyed traveling, camping and motorcycling.

In 2013, Jim and Sally moved to Calera to be closer to family. While living in Calera he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He especially loved watching Caleb play sports and Ansley performing in dance competitions. He loved spending time with his close friends and watching Alabama Football. Jim and Sally were members of the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster. Jim actively donated his time to the church and loved spending time with his church family.

Jim is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Sally Nielsen; children, Chris Nielsen (Roxanne) and Carey Easley; grandchildren, Caleb and Ansley Nielsen; niece, Laurie Nielsen; and sister-in-law, Margaret Brigham.
