Hamilton beats Corner behind late score

HAMILTON — Corner traveled to Hamilton to play the Aggies in Sargent stadium, and from the opening drive you knew it was going to be a physical football game.

In the end it was a late touchdown that proved to be the difference in Hamilton’s 14-7 victory.

The Yellow Jacket defense held strong and after a couple of first downs by Hamilton they forced a punt. Corner opened its first possession of the game with a quick passing attack and worked their way down the field. Corner senior quarterback Andrew Baker connected on a long pass over the middle to senior wide receiver Chandler Brakefield for a 40-plus yard gain putting the Yellow Jackets deep in Aggie territory.

The Yellow Jackets found themselves inside the Aggie 10-yard line due to the hard nosed running of junior running back Tommy Reed. Corner put the ball in the hands of Baker, who ran the ball into the end zone from 5 yards out for the touchdown and the first points of the game. The touchdown was followed by an extra point from Lane Gilchrist.

Midway through the second quarter Hamilton put together a scoring drive of its own with a mix of runs by Gabe Anglin and Jathan Johnson. The Aggie scoring drive was capped off by a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback Johnson with 4:09 left in the first half and the ensuing extra point was good.

With the teams tied at 7-7 in the fourth quarter, the Aggies — led by Johnson — marched down the field with a little help from a couple of ill-timed penalties by the Yellow Jackets. Johnson was able to stretch the ball over the goal line with 5 seconds left on the clock for the go ahead score followed by a successful extra point making the score 14-7.

The Yellow Jackets defense hung tough and several Jacket players had multiple tackles led by junior middle linebacker Josh Myrick, junior defensive end Cole Fuller, junior defensive tackle Danny Dill, junior safety Cameron Blalock.

Corner (2-3, 0-3) is off next week before traveling to Dora.
