Gordo edges Oakman in defensive battle

Oakman’s defense held Gordo’s potent offense in check Friday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Green Wave earned a 13-7 home victory in their Class 3A, Region 4 showdown.

Gordo (4-0, 2-0) got on the scoreboard in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The score remained that way through the next two quarters.

Oakman (2-1, 1-1) got on the scoreboard on a Malachi Bridges six-yard run in the fourth quarter, but that would be all the offense the Wildcats would get on the night.

Gordo is now 32-1 in its last 33 region game with the lone loss coming last year to Winfield. The 13 points for Gordo was their lowest regular season total since beating Billingsley 9-6 on the road in 2014.

The Wildcats will look to bounce back with a key region matchup at county rival Carbon Hill next week.

Oakman plays Walker County opposition each of the next two weeks. The next home game comes against Cordova on Sept. 27.
