December 3, 1923 -  March 15, 2020

Francis Orine Aycock Cross, a Jasper resident for 71 years, died peacefully at home on March 15, 2020, at age 96.

She was born in Decatur, Ala., on Dec. 3, 1923, the daughter of William Hubert Aycock and Orine White Aycock. She was raised in Athens, Ala., and learned bookkeeping and business basics at various part-time and summer jobs at U.G. White Hardware on the square in Athens. Francis graduated from Athens High School and enrolled at Athens College. She put her college studies on hold to support the war effort as a stenographer at Pryor Field, an Army Air Corps Fighter Training Base between Decatur and Athens. She met Capt. Charles Dudley Cross, the commanding officer, during her work at the base.

After the war, Francis continued her collegiate studies in Tuscaloosa and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce and Business Administration from the University of Alabama in August, 1947. She and Charlie were married at her home in Athens on September 16, 1947. Francis was an active volunteer at Park School, Central Middle School and Walker County High School. She served as Den Mother for Cub Scout Den 5, Pack 133, and she was a ten-year timer, judge and runner for the Jasper Swim Team. After her sons finished high school, Francis joined the Alabama Department of Human Resources as a case eligibility worker for 20 years. She was a long-time member of the Consensus Club and Jasper's First Baptist Church.

Francis was predeceased by her parents; brother, William Hubert Aycock, Jr. of Athens; sister, Dr. June Aycock Foley of Huntsville; husband, Charles Dudley Cross; and son, Dr. Charles Dudley Cross, II, of Jasper.

She is survived by her son, William Thomas Cross and his wife, Kitty, of Boca Grande, Florida; her daughter-in-law, Gina Thomas Cross of Franklin, Tennessee; her granddaughters, Sarah Cross O'Brien of San Carlos, Calif., Raleigh Cross Dunham (Mark) of St. Simons Island, Ga.; Carolyn Cross Carroll (Michael) of Malvern, Pa., Kirby Cross Willcutt (Ridge) of Jasper; and Callie Jordan Cross, a senior at Auburn University; her grandson, Charles Dudley Cross, III, a sophomore at Southern Methodist University; her great-grandsons, Conor William O'Brien, Brandon Michael O'Brien, and Samuel Ryan Carroll; and her great-granddaughter, Emily Michelle Carroll. In her final years, Francis was cared for by an attentive and loving team led by Jeannine Phillips.

A memorial service will be held at a time to be determined this summer, when large gatherings do not pose health risks for those attending and when her surviving family members are able to travel to Jasper to celebrate Francis's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Comfort Care Hospice of Jasper.
