Five Below coming to Jasper

Popular retailer Five Below is coming to Jasper.

A groundbreaking was held Monday at the store's future site next to Hobby Lobby in the Jasper Square Shopping Center.

Project Developer Carter Cooper of Richmond Properties said securing Five Below to locate in Jasper is a significant accomplishment for the city.

"Jasper is a smaller market than what they're typically used to going into," Cooper said. "It was a little bit of an uphill sales job to get them to come. Once they decided to make a site visit, they loved the market, and it was an easier sell."

Chamber of Commerce of Walker County President Linda Lewis welcomed a number of local officials to the groundbreaking Monday, including Sen. Greg Reed (R-Jasper).

"You can see that we're making progress. It's exciting," Reed said. "Now, all I've got to have is $5 in my pocket, and I can come and shop right here in just a few months."

Everything sold at Five Below is $5 or less, and the retailer is the only company that specifically markets to a younger demographic, particularly teenagers. According to Five Below's website, the company has eight distinctive shopping categories: style, room, play, tech, create, party, candy and new and now.

Jasper Mayor David O'Mary said Jasper's retail climate is strong and industrial prospects are promising.

"There's more coming, and that says something about Jasper," O'Mary said. "Jasper is on the cusp of great things."

"We're excited about the future, and there's a lot more coming to Jasper," Jeff Sommer, portfolio director for Retail Strategies, said.

Retail strategies is a company that works with the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Jasper to help recruit new businesses, and they have helped recruit the majority of businesses in the Jasper Square Shopping Center, including Five Below.

Sommer said Five Below will provide Walker County residents with a new shopping experience, and the success of surrounding retailers in the Jasper Square Shopping Center was a factor of consideration when Five Below decided to expand their retail base in Jasper.

"It's a fair deal. It's a good deal. It's new tax revenue coming in for the city," Sommer said. "It's a different brand offering that you would see in Hoover, Huntsville or Vestavia. It's a good little splash in the retail world knowing that Five Below has chosen to come here."

In an emailed statement to the Daily Mountain Eagle, Scott vonCannon, chief operations officer for Retail Strategies, expressed his enthusiasm for the Five Below announcement.

"We're thrilled of the upcoming opening of Five Below in Jasper. This retailer will complement a very successful shopping center in a thriving retail landscape within Walker County," he said. "Due to the longstanding partnership and guidance of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce, we have been able to maintain continuous success in this market for over six years. Mayor David O'Mary and the city council has also been able to create an environment that allows a business to prosper, especially in times of challenging national retail conditions. We anticipate the grand opening and this successful business venture in Jasper."

Matthew Woods, board chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County, expressed his gratitude to Five Below for choosing to locate in Jasper.

"Five Below is one of the fastest-growing retailers in the country, and I believe it will be very successful in Walker County," Woods said in an email to the Daily Mountain Eagle. "This is another example of the great working relationship between the Chamber of Commerce, Retail Strategies, and the City of Jasper. The Chamber has been very successful in bringing new retail opportunities to this area, but they would not be possible without a forward-thinking mayor and city council.”

Five Below will create 20 new jobs in Jasper. The retailer has $1.5 billion in annual sales, according to the Five Below website, with over 800 stores in 36 states.

Jasper is one of an estimated 1,750 Five Below stores that are expected to open in the future.

Five Below in Jasper is expected to open in the coming months, and a new parking lot will be added next to the structure to accommodate additional customers at the shopping center.
