Eagle Elite Softball: Sumiton Christian's Calloway comes up in the clutch

Eagles' senior named Player of Year

Posted

Sumiton Christian’s Anna Calloway was a consistent and formidable presence for the Eagles in her two seasons as a starter in the circle.

During the 2019 season, Calloway added good results at the plate to her stellar resume to round-out a senior year that saw her garner AHSAA First-Team All-State honors.

Calloway is the Daily Mountain Eagle Elite Player of the Year.

In the circle, the Central Alabama signee threw 20 complete games, with six shutouts and two no-hitters for a 1.56 ERA. Showing great accuracy and command, she walked just 36 batters while striking out 169 in 175.1 innings pitched.

Offensively, Calloway posted a .426 batting average, with 48 runs scored, 70 RBIs, 12 doubles and three home runs.

One of her most complete performances of the year came in an area contest against archrival Sulligent, where she pitched a complete game shutout, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out six batters, and followed at the plate by going 2 for 2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a double.

Sumiton Christian head coach Jessica Aderholt said Calloway’s improved batting abilities and excellent pitching was vital to the program.

“Anna meant a lot to the team and has really stepped-up in a leadership role. She didn’t get her shot to be our starting pitcher until her junior year, but she stuck it out and kept working hard. When she got her chance she came in and pitched well,” Aderholt said. “This year, what she brought to us in plate production was very valuable, coupled with her success in the circle made Anna an extremely important to the team.”
