Eagle Elite Player of the Year: Shelton shines for Jasper

Posted

When the Jasper Viking offense took the field during the 2019 season, opposing defenses always had to keep an eye out for Kaden Shelton.

Whether running the ball behind the Vikings’ prolific offensive line, catching passes out of the backfield and along the sidelines and even lining up under center, Shelton was a viable threat to score on every play.

Shelton is the Daily Mountain Eagle Elite Player of the Year.

As the centerpiece in Class 5A’s top offense, Shelton totaled 1,575 all-purpose yards and scored 26 touchdowns. He had 147 rushes for 1,105 yards with 20 touchdowns, hauled-in 18 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and completed 8 of 11 passes for 209 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Shelton’s offensive output amounted to more than 131 yards and two touchdowns per game.

His top performance of the year came in a 42-20 win over Lawrence County, where it was sorely needed after other parts of the Jasper offense struggled. Shelton ran for 209 yards on 17 carries, scoring four touchdowns.

Beyond his contributions on the field, Shelton was heavily lauded by the coaching staff and his fellow players for strong leadership and commitment to upholding the ideals of the program.

“When I watched Kaden on a tape from 2017, I could see how much talent and potential against some of strong programs he played against like Gardendale. I watched his growth and it’s been incredible. Last year he had a good year, this year was great. From running the ball well, to passing and receiving, he did it all well,” Jasper head coach Bryan Moore said.

“His leadership was what really took the next step. It was one of the primary reasons for our success. He’s a once-in-a-generation player and the most offensively gifted players I’ve ever coached in terms of his versatility.”

As a junior, Shelton picked up 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground on 191 carries.
