Eagle Elite Baseball Coach of the Year: Blair’s Eagles bounce back

Posted

Early in the 2019 baseball season Sumiton Christian was struggling.

After a quick 2-0 start, the Eagles dropped eight straight games. The streak had a lot to do with Sumiton Christian’s tough schedule, which included games against perennial powers Athens Bible, Mars Hill, Decatur Heritage and Jasper.

Once they snapped the skid against Oak Grove, the Eagles caught fire, winning 13 of their last 16 regular-season games, claiming an area championship and earning a home playoff series.

Sumiton Christian’s Lance Blair is the 2019 Eagle Elite Baseball Coach of the Year.

Blair guided the team into the second round where Sumiton Christian dropped a pair of games to Decatur Heritage.

The Eagles advanced to the playoffs for the 18th time in 19 years under Blair and made the second round for ninth time overall and for the fourth year in a row.

Sumiton Christian finished 4-0 in Class 2A, Area 9 play with sweeps over Altamont and Vincent. In the playoffs, the Eagles earned a first-round sweep of Ohatchee. In the second round, Sumiton Christian fell short in a back-and-forth 13-11 loss to Decatur Heritage in Game 1 and dropped Game 2 14-4.

The Eagles closed the season at 17-13.

Sumiton Christian was led by a group of seniors — Garrett Potts, Sam Dixon, Jake Jones, Jarrett McLain, C.J. Bunn, Joe Hicks and Josh Marshall.
