Ten Bulldogs qualify for state tourney

BIRMINGHAM — Dora coach Hezzie Morgan has sent countless wrestlers to the State Tournament — but never this many in the same season.

The Bulldogs had 10 wrestlers qualify for the State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the AHSAA Class 1A-5A North Super Section Tournament at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

Dora placed fourth in the event, racking up 158.5 points. Arab won the tournament with 259 points, followed by Scottsboro (211) and Mortimer Jordan (182.5).

The top eight finishers from each weight class advance to the State Wrestling Tournament to be held Thursday through Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

A total of 18 local wrestlers earned state berths. Five Jasper wrestlers and three Corner wrestlers also qualified.

Dora left Saturday’s event with a section champion in Zach Clayton (55-1), who won the 132-pound weight class, beating Susan Moore’s Kase Robertson in a 3-1 decision in the championship match.

Dora’s Carlos Chavez (56-10) placed second in the 113-pound division, falling to Arab’s Joseph Martin 4-0.

Ronny Henderson (35-9) took fourth in the 285-pound division. Three Dora grapplers placed fifth, Nathan Bahrik (46-9 in the 145-pound class), Jordan Tyree (68-7 in the 152-pound class) and David Williams (63-7 in the 160-pound class). Samari Harris (57-18) placed sixth in the 106-pound class, Xander Stewart (49-27) was sixth in the 120-pound class, Chance Thompson (50-11) was seventh in the 170-pound class and Josef Wallace (43-24) was eighth in the 182-pound class.

JASPER

For the Vikings, competing in the Class 6A, North Super Section, A.J. Smith (32-16) led the way, taking fourth place in the 220-pound division. Mark Stitt (30-17) placed seventh in the 160-pound division. Three wrestlers finished in eighth in their weight classes — Dylan Garner (32-17 in the 113-pound class), Maney Havis (37-19 in the 132-pound class) and Brodie Vinson (25-22 in the 182-pound class).

CORNER

Nicholas Brashear (21-6) was the top finisher for the Yellow Jackets in the 1A-5A North Super Section, taking sixth in the 170-pound division. Both Nathan Wunderlich (17-8 in the 145-pound division) and Griffin Murphy (23-14 in the 220-pound division) finished eighth.
