Dora vet monument dedication to be held Saturday

Posted

Dora – Dedication for the new Dora Area Veterans Memorial Monument is Saturday, November 9, at 11 a.m. The new monument stands in front of the Dora Civic Center on Sharon Blvd. next to the city hall.

Dora Mayor Randy Stephens will make the opening remarks with Pastor James Kelley providing the invocation. The Dora High School band will play the National Anthem and perform additional music.

The guest speaker is Alabama Senator Greg Reed. The city will provide refreshments after the ceremony.

Planners began work on the new monument honoring Dora area veterans the week after Veterans Day last year and have been hard at work turning the vision into reality. The goal is to have the memorial completed by Veterans Day this year.

The committee members include Bob and Billie Sue Moon, James Singleton, Don and Melissa Landrum, Carolyn and Ellis McDonald, and Hezikiah Walker.

Laser Works of Alabama set the monument in place in late July, and crews have worked on landscaping, lighting, and other features of the area through the fall.

Stephens said at a council meeting in early October that he is proud to do something to honor the men and women who stepped forward and served our country.
