Dora, Oakman just miss preseason football rankings

Posted

Dora and Oakman will start the season just outside of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s preseason football poll, which was released Sunday night.

Both the Bulldogs and Wildcats are the first schools listed among the other teams receiving votes in the their respective classifications.

Dora, moving up from Class 4A to Class 5A, received 39 votes, two behind 10th place Beauregard.

The Bulldogs finished 9-3, making the second round of the playoffs in coach Bart Lockhart’s first year at the school in 2017.

Briarwood Christian is No. 1 in 5A with 372 votes, followed by Etowah (256), Vigor (231), Carroll-Ozark (158), Demopolis (154), St. Clair County (152), Wenonah (138), Tallassee (91), Jackson (48) and Beauregard (41).

In Class 3A, Oakman picked up 51 votes, one behind 10th place St. James.

The Wildcats (8-4 in 2017) have won at least eight games and a playoff game each of the last seven years.

Randolph County is first in 3A with 295 votes, followed by Mobile Christian (289), Gordo (214), Fultondale (194), Piedmont (171), Saks (155), Thomasville (134), Pike County (87), Wicksburg and St. James (52).

Four defending state champions open the season at No. 1 — Hoover (7A), Pinson Valley (6A), UMS-Wright (4A) and Lanett (1A). Lanett won the 2A title last year, but moved down a classification for the 2018 season.

Briarwood Christian, last year’s state runner up, is ranked No. 1 in 5A after champion St. Paul’s moved to 6A because of the state’s new competitive balance rule.

Randolph County starts the year No. 1 in Class 3A. Defending champ Hillcrest-Evergreen moved up a class and is ranked No. 2 behind UMS-Wright in Class 4A. State runner-up Leroy is No. 1 in Class 2A.

Autauga Academy opens No. 1 in the AISA.
