Dollar General builds in Eldridge

Eldridge — Officials said Wednesday Dollar General will open their 19th location in Walker County this summer in the Town of Eldridge.

Groundwork has begun at 376 Smothers Ave. in Eldridge, just across the road from Barbara Ann's Place.

A press release from Dollar General states the store will be 5,700 square feet and employ six to 10 people.

The company hasn't announced a firm opening date.

Dollar General will offer a number of refrigerated and frozen foods to Eldridge residents, as well as pre-packaged foods. The store will not offer produce, however.

Cleaning supplies, some clothing items, health and beauty products, home decor and many other products will be available for purchase.

Dollar General will provide a needed level of convenience to Eldridge residents, considering the nearest Dollar General is just over 6 and a half miles away in Carbon Hill.

Aside from providing retail benefits to Eldridge, the community will also be able to take advantage of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation's services.

"The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also supports individuals in the communities that Dollar General stores serve who may be interested in learning how to read, speak English or prepare for the high school equivalency test," Dollar General's press release states. "Referrals to a local organization that provides free literacy services are available online or a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for information is available at the cash register of every Dollar General store."

Online literacy services can be found at https://www.dgliteracy.org/national-literacy-directory/.

There are no plans to build other Dollar General locations in Walker County at this time, according to the company's public relations office.

One of the last Dollar General stores to open in Walker County was in Oakman last year.
