SUMITON – Dana Helms made a lot of kids happy when she opened Dana’s Shaved Ice in Sumiton just in time for summer.
Helms opened her doors in mid-April and business has been good. It’s located in a small strip mall on Hull Road across from Little Giant Produce.
She offers shaved ice with a wall-full of flavors to choose from. She has candy, popcorn, nachos, popsicles, homemade pork skins and hotdogs.
Helms got into the shaved ice business after visiting Tuscaloosa a few years ago.
“There was a little shaved ice stand with a bunch of people standing in line,” she said.
Helms realized that opening a business offering shaved ice was something she could do. She started out with a trailer that she pulled around to parks, places of business, and festivals.
When she found a good location in the strip mall with David’s Florist, she decided to try a brick and mortar business.
Her hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Young Noah Blackmon could not be more pleased with Helm’s decision to open next to his mom Heather Blackmon’s Fluffy Tails Pet Salon. Noah’s favorite flavor is wedding cake.
The kids love shaved ice when it’s hot, according to Helms. “And I love putting smiles on kid’s faces.”
