CURRY — Curry is back in the playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets ousted defending state champion Cordova 54-39 in their matchup Tuesday night in the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament at Curry High School.

Yellow Jackets eliminate Cordova in area tournament

CURRY — Curry is back in the playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets ousted defending state champion Cordova 54-39 in their matchup Tuesday night in the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament at Curry High School.

Curry’s Jakob Hicks had a monster game for the Yellow Jackets, scoring 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets is the area championship game vs. Haleyville set for 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The winner of Thursday’s game will host a sub-region playoff game while the loser travels.

Cordova kept things close until the third quarter. Curry held a 25-19 lead at the half and held the Blue Devils to just one basket in the third quarter. Hicks had eight points in the quarter and Curry took a commanding 38-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets (18-8) led by as many as 19 in the final quarter.

Blake Darty had 13 points for Curry while Colt Aaron added six.

For Cordova (2-16), Dylan Hendrix had 19 points and Kam Cooper added seven.

The Curry Yellow Jackets used a spectacular rebounding effort and second-chance shot opportunities to post a 54-33 victory over the Cordova Blue Devils — clinching a spot in both the Area 11 title game and a berth in the Class 4A sub-region round.

Abbey Moon led Curry with a double-double performance of 21 points and 19 rebounds, while Morgan Davidson added 17 points.

For Cordova, Jaqulyn Braswell scored 13 points and Abby Sargent had seven points.

Controlling the boards throughout the game, the Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Blue Devils 46-21, converting many into baskets on offense.

Both teams came out finding the basket in the first period, with Curry gaining a slight scoring advantage, 13-11.

The Yellow Jacket offense and defense gained solid footing in the second period, outscoring the Blue Devils 18-6. At the half, Moon had 14 points and 15 rebounds, with Curry ahead 31-17. Curry continued to control the tempo in the third period, scoring 12 points to Cordova’s six to retain command, 43-23.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the game scoring 11 points to the Blue Devils’ 10 for the 54-33 win. Curry plays the Haleyville Lions at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Curry for the area championship.
