The Walker County Board of Education has announced some board meetings will occur at county schools this year.
Superintendent Dr. Joel Hagood said one regularly scheduled meeting each quarter will be held in one of the districts represented by school board members.
"There's a lot of reasons for doing this," Hagood said. "One is to make closer connections to our school communities."
He explained people living outside of Jasper may not travel to the city often to have an opportunity to attend their meetings at the Carl Elliott building downtown. By having meetings in communities where a county school is located, citizens will have easy access to attend.
Hagood said seeing potential issues and the strengths of a facility firsthand will also be of benefit.
"It allows the other board members to see what's going on in the other schools," he said.
The first school board meeting outside of Jasper will be held in March, at a school to be determined in District 4. Hagood said each board member will be responsible for choosing which school in their district will be the host site.
If the school board stays on schedule, the June, September and December board meetings will also be held outside of Jasper.
"That's a little different twist from what we're accustomed to in the past," Hagood said.
It is not uncommon for school boards to host meetings at respective schools in their system. For example, the Jasper City Board of Education occasionally holds meetings at schools in the city, away from the central office.
