Council approves Red Cross lease agreement

The Cordova City Council approved a lease agreement with the American Red Cross on Tuesday.

The Red Cross, which is selling its facility on Viking Drive in Jasper, will pay $537.50 a month to cover 25 percent of the cost of utilities at the former National Guard Amory.

“I think for their purposes, rather than let it fluctuate seasonally they wanted a fixed number,” Mayor Drew Gilbert said.

The lease is a three-year agreement that will begin June 1, 2017 and end May 31, 2020.

The Red Cross will be occupying space recently vacated by the Cordova Water and Gas Board.

City attorney Ben Goldman told council members he is recommending minor modifications to the lease proposed by the Red Cross

“It looks to me like they used a standard form that would apply to their operations anywhere in the country. You can tell that when they put some attention on dealing with ice and snow,” Goldman said. “There are a few things that we need to localize, but nothing that should be too onerous.”

The council also added Donna King to the city’s Parks and Rec Board and accepted Rhonda Hitchcock’s application to fill the vacant District 7 seat.
