Corner edges Hayden 19-17 on late FG

CORNER — In a hard fought region 7 game Corner edged Hayden 19-17 at home, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Corner’s Lane Gilchrist made a 32-yard field goal with 1:21 remaining to provide the winning points and Cameron Blalock picked off a pass in the end zone with 22 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Corner stopped Hayden on the first three plays and forced a 3 and out and a Hayden punt. Chandler Brakefield received the punt and returned it 35 yards to set the Jackets up with great field position to start the drive on the Hayden 27 yard line. The Jackets kept the ball on the ground behind a couple of runs by Senior Brody Tavel which set up a 1 yard touchdown run by Junior Joshua Myrick. The following PAT attempt by Lane Gilchrist was good and pushed the score to 7-0 corner at the 6:35 minute mark in the first quarter.

The ensuing kickoff by Corner went out of bounds and gave Hayden good starting field position at the 35 yard line.

The Wildcats didn’t take long to answer and on the second play of the drive Hayden senior running back Cole Goolsby broke loose for a 59 yard touchdown run. Hayden tacked on the PAT attempt to even the score at 7-7 with 3:15 to go in the first quarter.

Hayden’s offense came alive midway through the second quarter when Evan Orr took the ball for a 65-yard run from scrimmage and he was tackled at the 3-yard line by Corner defender Cameron Blalock.

On the next play, Silas Miller ran the ball into the end zone to put Hayden up 13-7 and with the extra point good Hayden made the score 14-7 with 7:49 left in the first half.

Getting the ball back with 50 seconds left in the half, the Corner offense went into hurry up mode and sophomore quarterback Colin Daniel found junior Cole Fuller for several first down catches to set up a 45-yard field goal attempt. Senior kicker Lane Gilchrist promptly nailed the 45-yard attempt as time ran out to make the score 14-10 Hayden going into the half.

Corner received the ball to start the second half and behind good running by Tavel and senior Andrew Baker the Yellow jackets marched down the field. The Yellow Jackets found the end zone behind a 25 yard touchdown run by Brody Tavel making the score 16-14 with 8:13 to go in the third quarter.

Hayden went back on top 17-16 with a 40-yard field goal with seven minutes remaining in the game.

Corner received the kickoff and steadily moved the ball down the field, eating up clock as they went. Hayden’s defense held strong and with 1:21 left in the game they forced a 32 yard field goal attempt by Corners Lane Gilchrist. Lanes kick was good and put Corner ahead with a score of 19-17.

Hayden (2-6, 1-4 )responded with a drive of its own. With 22 seconds left in the game and Hayden on the Corner 17-yard line Hayden quarterback Silas Miller lofted a ball into the end zone which was intercepted by Corner safety Cameron Blalock to give the Jackets the win.

Corner (4-3, 2-3) plays at West Point next week.
