CORNER — Sloppy field conditions kept Corner’s passing attack grounded, but the Yellow Jackets were able to take advantage of five Lawrence County turnovers to earn a 24-8 victory and secure Class 5A, Region 7’s fourth-place playoff spot on Friday night.

Though the Red Devils held the edge in total yardage, 274-177, Corner was aided by a combination of Lawrence County errant snaps and penalties, along with the turnovers to clinch their fourth-consecutive postseason berth.

Thomas Reed led the Yellow Jacket offense with 93 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown. Brody Tavel contributed 40 yards on 11 carries.

Corner’s defense was able to intercept three Lawrence County passes, with picks by Cameron Blalock, Lane Gilchrist and Skylar Trawick.

“We were mentally tougher than they were tonight, and I told our team that all week. That’s our identity. It’s a great team to coach,” Corner head coach Jon Clements said. “Hats off to our defense, they’ve carried us all year. Tonight, they kept doing what they always do. I am really proud of our team.”

Gilchrist’s interception late in the first quarter set up the first Corner score of the game on a four-play, 16-yard drive. Marshall Burkett found the endzone from two yards-out, giving the Yellow Jackets 7-0 edge after Gilchrist’s extra point.

Midway through the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets found the endzone again following an 11-play, 77-yard drive, ending with a one-yard run by Joshua Myrick for the touchdown. Gilchrist connected for the extra point, leaving Corner on top, 14-0 at the half.

Early in the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets added two points to the scoreboard on a safety for 16-0 lead. Corner’s final score came early in the fourth quarter when Reed found the endzone on a 14-yard run, ending a 48-yard drive. Myrick found Joseph Fuller on the two-point conversion for the 24-0 advantage.

Lawrence County scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter on an 80-yard drive and converted two-points for the 24-8 final.

The Yellow Jackets (6-3, 4-3) wrap up the regular season on Friday night when they host the Oakman Wildcats.
