CURRY — Justin Wallace and his offensive line were dominant in the Cordova Blue Devils’ 46-20, Class 4A, Region 5 victory over the Curry Yellow Jackets at Curry.

Wallace finished the night with 223 yards on 23 carries with six touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ second consecutive victory to keep Cordova’s playoff hopes alive.

Kason Smith also had a good night for Cordova, completing 6 of 9 passes for 69 yards, while rushing for 49 yards on seven carries with one touchdown.

Jody Hester had an outstanding performance for Curry, with 28 rushes for 171 yards. Ethan Wideman caught four passes for 36 yards and scored all three of the Yellow Jackets’ touchdowns.

“I think we had to battle some complacency tonight — we’re still learning how to win games and finish games. Those are things we have to work on. But I’m proud of our kids and coaches,” Cordova head coach Justin Jones said.

“We’ve got some fine tuning we need to do with scoring not just when it’s close, but on every drive. We control our own destiny from here out — we just have to work on getting better every week.”

Smith took the ball in from four yards out to put the first Cordova touchdown on the scoreboard after a seven-play, 82-yard drive. The extra point kick was missed, giving the Blue Devils the 6-0 edge.

Cordova’s next score came in the second quarter on a six-yard run by Wallace, ending a 53-yard drive.

Wallace ran for the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 14-0.

Midway through the quarter, Wallace found the endzone on a three-yard run to cap a 54-yard drive. The extra point kick failed again, with Cordova remaining in control, 20-0.

The Blue Devils added a final score before the half thanks to an eight-yard run by Wallace. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, giving Cordova the 26-0 halftime advantage.

Curry took the first possession of the second half and drove 77 yards on 10 plays, ending with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Stewart to Wideman. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Cordova on top, 26-6.

The Blue Devils answered with a quick two-play, 47 yard drive, as Wallace found the endzone on a six-yard run. Eli Quich-Escobar kicked the extra point, with Cordova in control, 33-6. Curry responded on another nine-yard touchdown pass from Stewart to Wideman. Wideman ran to the endzone for the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 33-13.

Cordova scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter — on Wallace runs of 28 and 8 yards to put the Blue Devils ahead 46-14.

Curry finalized the score on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Stewart to Wideman, 46-20, following the failed two-point conversion.

Cordova (2-5, 1-3) returns home for their next region battle against the visiting Oak Grove Tigers.

Curry (0-7, 0-4), eliminated from postseason contention, battles the hosting-Good Hope Raiders.
