SUMITON — Cordova made a run to the tournament championship game at the Bevill State Invitational on Saturday — winning consecutive games over Hueytown and Sumiton Christian before losing 7-2 to Class 6A power Gardendale in the tournament’s finale.

Cordova takes second in Bevill State Invitational

Gardendale goes 7-0, wins tournament

SUMITON — Cordova made a run to the tournament championship game at the Bevill State Invitational on Saturday — winning consecutive games over Hueytown and Sumiton Christian before losing 7-2 to Class 6A power Gardendale in the tournament’s finale.

Gardendale (13-2-1) closed out the two-day tournament with a perfect 7-0 record, outscoring the competition 59-10.

Cordova advanced to the championship round with a 4-3 victory over Sumiton Christian while the Rockets advanced with a 15-5 victory over Carbon Hill.

Both Sumiton Christian and Carbon Hill finished in a tie for third place in the eight-team tournament.

Gardendale 7, Cordova 2 (Tournament Final)

Gardendale pushed across five runs in the third inning to break a tie en route to its win championship game win over Cordova.

The teams were tied through two innings.

Cordova notched the score at 2-2 in the top of the second inning. Gracie Trotter’s RBI single scored Grace Kilpatrick and a Lillian Werling double drove in Paige Phillips.

Raven Clark pitched the first two and one-third innings in the loss, giving up four hits and seven runs, while striking out one batter. Haley Hann pitched the final two and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up four hits and striking out two batters.

Offensively, Sargent and Clark were 2 for 3, Werling was 2 for 2 with an RBI, Trotter went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Phillips and Kilpatrick scored a run each.

Carbon Hill 5, five innings

(Tournament semifinal)

Sarah Stovall pitched three innings in the loss, giving up nine runs and three walks. Santana Clark pitched an inning in relief, striking out two batters.

At the plate, Karlie Ratliff went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Clark was 1 for 3 with a run scored, Abby Martin went 1 for 2 with a run scored, Allie Parr recorded an RBI with a run scored and Adison Alexander scored a run.

Sumiton Christian 3

(Tournament semifinal)

Raven Clark pitched the Blue Devils past the Eagles in their semifinal matchup.

Jaqulyn Braswell provided the big hit for Cordova, belting a three-run home run.

With the win, Cordova avenged a regular-season loss to Sumiton Christian on Thursday. The Eagles won that game 12-6.

Pool play games

Cordova 12, Hueytown 7, eight innings

Raven Clark pitched eight innings in the win for Cordova, recording four strikeouts.

At the plate, Abby Sargent went 3 for 5 with two runs scored, a double and four RBIs, Anna Key was 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs, Kailey Johnson went 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI, Jaqulyn Braswell was 2 for 5 with three runs scored and a double, Lillian Werling went 2 for 5 with a run scored, Haley Hann had a hit with three runs scored and a double, Clark and Gracie Trotter each recorded a hit and Shayna Woods scored a run.

Tied at 6-6 in the top of the eighth innings, the Blue Devils’ bats went to work, with RBI singles by Johnson, Hann, Key and Werling and a two-run RBI double by Sargent that helped lead to the 12-7 victory.

Sumiton Christian 12, Pleasant Grove 0,

five innings

The Eagles’ offense delivered a powerful showing in a 12-0 win over Pleasant Grove.

Amber Hayes went a perfect 4 for 4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and five RBIs, Anna Calloway was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Taylor Whisonant went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and an RBI, Kaley McCrary was 1 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs, Jessica Baughn had a hit with three runs scored and a triple, AK Tyree recorded a hit with two runs scored, Zana Aderholt had a hit with a run scored, Angel Whitlow recorded a hit with an RBI and Kalista Cornelison scored a run.

In the circle, Mak Miller pitched five shoutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks, while striking out 10 batters.

Sumiton Christian 14, Dora 0, three innings

After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles broke open the contest with a seven run second inning and followed with an eight run third inning in the 14-0 win over the Bulldogs.

Anna Calloway pitched three innings in the win for Sumiton Christian, giving up one hit and a walk and striking out eight batters.

Offensively, Calloway was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored, a double and four RBIs, Whisonant went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and three RBIs, Tyree was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, Cornelison went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Baughn was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a triple and four RBIs while McCrary had a hit with two runs scored, a double and two RBIs.

Hayes recorded a hit with a run scored and Aderholt had a hit with two runs scored and an RBI.

Carbon Hill 1

Santana Clark gave up five hits, two walks and struck out two batters in six innings in the loss to Gardendale.

Offensively, Abby Martin had a hit with a run scored, Alayna Ivie recorded a double, Adison Alexander had an RBI and Clark, Alleigh Keeton and Allie Parr each recorded a hit.

Carbon Hill 10, Oakman 5

Karlie Ratliff picked up the win for Carbon Hill, giving up one hit, two runs, two walks and striking out one batter in four innings. Sarah Stovall pitched three innings in relief, giving up five hits, three runs and recording one strikeout.

At the plate for the Bulldogs, Ratliff went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double, a triple and four RBIs, Abby Martin was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs, Parr went 2 for 4 with a run scored, Ivie was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Alleigh Keeton had a double with two runs scored and Mahaley Pugh, Ana Grace Guy and Ally Martin each scored a run.

For Oakman, Jillian Gurganus pitched three and one-third innings in the loss, recording two strikeouts, while Katelyn Makemson pitched three and two-thirds innings, recording two strikeouts.

Offensively, Shalayiah Waid went 1 for 3 with a run scored, Samantha Kelly was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Iyana Canada had a hit with two runs scored, Jade Bonner recorded a hit, Savannah Brown had a hit with a run scored and an RBI and Barrentine scored a run.
