CORDOVA — The Cordova Blue Devils continued their quest for a playoff berth by defeating the Oak Grove Tigers 41-26 Friday night at Hudson-Kerby Field.

The Tigers’ defense had no answer for the trio of Justin Wallace, Kason Smith and Adam O’Rear.

Wallace carried the ball 28 times for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Smith finished the game going 8 of 16 for 197 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. Smith also ran for 83 yards on 14 carries and a score. O’Rear caught four passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Cordova (3-5, 2-3) scored with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter on a 20-yard run by Smith, but Oak Grove (1-8, 1-5) cut the lead to one with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Logan Sims to Zane Brinson. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 21-6 lead to open the second quarter with two scores in less than a minute.

Smith hit O’Rear on a 63-yard touchdown pass and following an interception by Cordova’s Mason Farley, Wallace scored on a one-yard run.

Oak Grove dominated the rest of the second quarter. With 8:28 remaining, the Tigers scored on a 40-yard interception return by Sims. After blocking a Blue Devil field-goal attempt, they got in the endzone on a 42-yard pass from Sims to Gage Capleton with 38 seconds on the clock and only trailed 21-18 going into halftime.

Cordova took control of the game in the second half. Jacob Kilgore ended Oak Grove’s first two offense drives with interceptions and then the Blue Devils scored on their next three drives. Wallace ran for two of the touchdowns, each one from inside the Tigers 10- yard line.

Smith threw the other one to O’Rear for 66 yards.

Oak Grove scored with nine seconds remaining in the game, but it was too little too late.

“It’s always good to win, period,” said Cordova head coach Justin Jones. “It’s so hard to win these days. So much goes into winning a game — it’s really tough. So we’re proud to get a region win. Tonight sets up the matchup for next week with a chance to get into the playoffs.”

Cordova hosts Haleyville next Friday night.
