Constable arrested on sex charges

A Walker County constable has been arrested for rape and sexual abuse of a child.

James "Ott" Estes, 42, of Nauvoo, was arrested on May 18 after being indicted by a grand jury in February.

According to court documents, two first-degree rape charges stem from incidents that occurred in September and October 2006. Estes also allegedly inappropriately touched a child less than 12 years old during a time period from 2006 to 2016. All of the incidents occurred at the same location on Duncan Road.

Estes had brief stints working as an officer at police departments in Parrish and Carbon Hill in 2005.

He ran unopposed for constable of Beat 33 as a Democrat in 2008 and 2012 and as an independent in 2016.

A cash bond of $150,000 has been set.

Estes is the second Walker County constable in recent memory to be charged with sex crimes.

In 2018, former constable James William Shedd was convicted and received an 80-year  sentence in a case that involved trafficking and child prostitution and at least six victims.
