Clyde Gerald Hood died peacefully on February 8, 2018 surrounded by family and loved ones in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 80 years old. He touched many lives through his generosity and soulful tenor voice.

Clyde was born on April 21, 1937 to Walter and Crecia Hood. It was in the fields of his father’s farm singing that Clyde found his love for harmony. Clyde loved gospel music his entire life and sang for many years as one of the original members of the Gospel Inspirations. He spent his free time traveling around the south singing and sharing the gospel through song.

In 1960, Clyde swept a lovely young lady named Joan Davis off of her feet at a dance in Guin. A short time later, they married on October 22 and settled in Jasper, where they welcomed the first of their three children shortly thereafter. Clyde was known as “Tall Boy” while coal mining with Drummond Coal for over thirty years and was also a deacon at the First Freewill Baptist Church of Jasper.

In his twilight, Clyde loved watching the Paul Finebaum football program and the Golf Channel, listening to southern gospel and bluegrass music, and spending time with his wife, kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and dog, Toby.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Crecia Hood; seven brothers and sisters; and great-grandchild, Haven Kate Hood.

Clyde is survived by his cherished wife of fifty-eight years, Joan; beloved children, Dana and husband Chris, Sam and wife Andrea, and Brian and fiancé Alexis Padis; sisters, Jimmie Nell Baker and Shirley Black; brother, Kerry Hood; sister-in-law, Patsy Keeton; brothers-in-law, Ralph “Buck” Davis and Joel and Dianna Davis; as well as grandchildren, Jake and wife Amanda, Lauren and husband Corey, Chase and wife Kattie, Kalin Sorensen, Clay Sorensen, and Jordan Faulkner; and great-grandchildren, Finley and Rhett Hood, Mac and Griffin Walker. Clyde will be missed by so many, including pup Toby, who would sit for hours on end with Clyde in their favorite chair. May his memory be eternal.

The family will receive friends at Collins-Burke Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, and the funeral will be held in the chapel at Collins-Burke Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 12. Burial will be at Ashbank Cemetery in Nauvoo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Clyde’s name to the Freewill Baptist Children’s Home in Eldridge, Alabama or to the Birmingham Arthritis Foundation.
