City council, mayor ‘actively involved’ in new high school

Posted

This is in response to your article in Sunday’s Daily Mountain Eagle “Attorney Clarifies Council’s Role...” You have to love (or loath) a politician. The city council and mayor of Jasper are up to their necks in the new high school. They get their lawyer to issue an opinion that they have nothing to do with the Jasper Board of Education. They cannot control the Jasper Board of Education. Please stop calling, texting or emailing your elected representatives.

Let’s review a few facts that can be archived in past issues of the Daily Mountain Eagle.

•The city council and mayor passed a 1-cent sales tax increase to fund the construction of the new high school. The entire city council and mayor (except Jed Daniel) voted for it.

•The council and mayor traveled around the state touring recently constructed high schools.

•The mayor said in a DME article, “The city council will be actively involved in the construction of the new high school.”

•The city council and mayor have asked for and received updates from the general contractor.

The city council and mayor cannot do anything concerning the naming of the new high school? Let me help you. Pass a resolution at the next council meeting that if the school is not named Walker High School you will rescince the 1-cent sales tax that funds it. Problem solved. The truth is the city council has funded, planned and implemented this entire fiasco without any referendum by the people.

You are all up for re-election soon. I suggest you move quickly. Remember, you are all “actively involved.”
