City BOE provides update on athletics projects

The Jasper City Board of Education is hoping for some days of sunshine to finish various athletics projects.

Superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson invited Russ Russell of Warner's Athletic Construction to a meeting of the BOE on Monday for him to give an update on the high school's baseball field turf project.

"We are just fighting rain," Russell said.

By the end of the week, he expects turf to start being installed at the baseball field.

"Hopefully, by the end of the weekend, we'll actually have a baseball field instead of a rock pile," he said. "Fingers crossed that Mother Nature lets us."

Jackson said work continues on the school's new tennis courts. Work had been delayed on the project due to compaction issues on the west side of the court, but the problem has since been corrected.

"They are about 50 percent finished with that backfield, and, of course, they were hoping the weather would be good today (Monday) and that they would be able to finish that up mid-week. They probably will not be able to do that," Jackson said, as rain poured outside on Monday. "They were also hoping to pour the first section of the sidewalk this week, but they will need to have several dry days to do it."

The track project is on hold due to a pipe that needs to be extended. Getting the pipe extended will, again, all depend on the weather.

"It's all weather contingent right now," Jackson said. "They are moving along and they are trying — if the weather would just cooperate."

In other business, the school board:

• approved a draft of the 2020-21 school calendar. The calendar won't officially be approved until next month's meeting.

The potential calendar has students returning to school on Monday, Aug. 10, in line with the proposed calendar for Walker County Schools. Students would be out for Thanksgiving from Nov. 23-27 and for Christmas and the New Year's holiday from Dec. 21-Jan. 4. A spring break is also scheduled for March 22-26, 2021, the same as Walker County Schools. Graduation would be on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

• approved to transfer an old school bus to the Walker County Sheriff's Office.
