Chick-fil-A, one of the original tenants of the Jasper Mall, will be closing its mall location on Saturday, March 25, affecting 13 employees.

A flier was posted at the restaurant on Monday. Kim Hall, the owner and operator, said the flier was posted on March 6, after receiving word of the closing from corporate officials on March 3. She waited to post the sign to first inform her employees face-to-face.

Chick-fil-A to close Jasper Mall location

Chick-fil-A, one of the original tenants of the Jasper Mall, will be closing its mall location on Saturday, March 25, affecting 13 employees.

A flier was posted at the restaurant on Monday. Kim Hall, the owner and operator, said the flier was posted on March 6, after receiving word of the closing from corporate officials on March 3. She waited to post the sign to first inform her employees face-to-face.

“I didn’t want them to hear about it from anybody but me,” Hall said Monday.

“We thank you for your business over the past 35 1/2 years,” Hall said in the flier. “I also want to say THANKS to our customers and friends that I have gotten to know in my 11 years here at the Jasper Mall location. It has truly been My Pleasure!”

“My pleasure” is a common response to requests at the restaurant chain, known for its Christian values and closing on Sundays.

The closing is the second major hit the mall has taken since December, as Kmart, one of the original anchor stores when it opened in 1981, announced it would close. That store has been holding a closing sale.

JCPenney, another original anchor in the mall, said last month it was closing 130 to 140 stores across the nation later this year, but no list has been released yet of actual stores, leaving the fate of the Jasper store in question.

CNBC has reported the stores to be closed represent 13 to 14 percent of Penney's physical portfolio but generate less than 5 percent of its annual sales.

The general manager of the Jasper Mall, Marsha Massey, could not be reached Monday for comment. Corporate officials from Chick-fil-A’s headquarters in Atlanta also could not be reached Monday for comment.

Speaking behind the counter at the Chick-fil-A store, Hall said Monday that the decision to close came from out-of-state.

“Corporate just decided to close,” she said. “I am personally relocating. I’m moving to Fort Payne. Me being the owner/operator, it goes back to being a corporate-owned store at that point when I leave. So they just decided to close.”

She said many regular customers have been asking about the closing.

“We had one lady, it almost broke my heart because she started crying,” Hall said. “It was an elderly lady who comes in every day. So we’re going to miss our regulars we’ve had over the years. It is the regulars we are going to miss.”

A different owner/operator is in charge of the freestanding Chick-fil-A down the street in front of Home Depot, and that restaurant will continue operation, Hall said.

“We’ve checked with her to see if she might have a spot for some of those who are here,” she said. “She’s interviewing and talking to some of them who might want to go out there.”

She said with many friends and employees that she has met over the years, Hall hates to say goodbye to them.

“I’ve enjoyed my time being here and the relationships that I’ve got to make and the friends I’ve made in the community,” Hall said. “It is kind of a bittersweet thing.”

According to the company’s website, Chick-fil-A has 2,100 restaurants in 46 states and the District of Columbia, and helped pioneer the concept of having a restaurant in a mall in 1964 in Atlanta, Ga.

The family-owned, privately-held company is the largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States, the website states.
