Charles Ray Underwood


Charles Ray Underwood, was born Dec. 11, 1930, and was called home on Oct. 4, 2019, at 88 years of age.

Family will be receiving friends Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, from 10 until 11 a.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Kilgore-Green Chapel, with burial at New Prospect Baptist Cemetery. Howard Thompson will officiate.

Charles served as a deacon at New Prospect Baptist Church, was a US Air Force veteran, was married to his wife, Nellodean, for 64 years, and was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Charles was born in Belmont, Miss., to his parents, Hector and Elva Underwood. He spent most of his life in Jasper, Ala. A graduate of Walker County High School, Charles was an all-county guard on the football team. Immediately after high school graduation, Charles volunteered for the United States Air Force. He served in the Korean Conflict as a forward air controller. Charles earned the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal.

Shortly after returning home from his country‚Äôs service, Charles married his high school sweetheart, Nellodean Richardson. Charles managed his own business for many years, and eventually became a heavy equipment operator in the surface mines, a job he truly enjoyed. 

After retiring, Charles took joy in spending time working on the facilities at New Prospect Baptist Church, spending time taking care of his property, and assisting anyone that needed a helping hand. 

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Nellodean Richardson Underwood; parents, Hector and Elva Underwood; brother, Bill Underwood and sister, Lee Underwood Sovey.

He is survived by his brother, Jackie Underwood (Ann); daughter, Karen Underwood Lloyd; sons, Charles Richard Underwood (Candace) and  James Robert Underwood (Cindy); grandchildren, Jonathan Matthew Lloyd (Erin), Lindsey Lloyd Walton (Clint), Davis Hanson Underwood, Sawyer Richardson Underwood, Kourtney Kiker and Mackenzie Vintson; great granddaughter; Savanah Grace Walton and a host nieces, nephews, and friends.
