Carbon Hill girls take second in area tournament

Carbon Hill battled Winfield down to the last second, dropping the Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament championship game 36-34 on Wednesday night at Winfield High School.

Lacey Evans' potential game-winning shot at the buzzer just missed the mark, giving the Pirates the area tournament championship as well as a home game in the sub-region round of the playoffs next week.

As the runner up, Carbon Hill will travel to either Holly Pond or New Hope for its sub-region game next week.

On Wednesday, Carbon Hill trailed 9-6 after the first quarter and 24-19 at the half. Winfield maintained a 31-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs battled back from a five-point deficit with 28 seconds left in the game to put themselves in position for the win.

"We got a steal off the inbounds to have the final shot. We were going to win it or lose it on the last shot. We weren't playing for overtime. We have been the underdog all year so we played to win," Carbon Hill coach Wade Tittle said. "My kids played their hearts out. We just needed one more shot to fall. I love how we are competing right now. These girls know how to win so we get to play again next week with a spot at Wallace (the regional tournament) on the line. We will be ready to play."

Abby Martin had an all-around performance for Carbon Hill (18-12) with nine points, eight steals, seven assists and six rebounds. Allie Parr had nine points, Evans had seven points and 13 rebounds, Alayna Ivie had five points and Bailey Kelley added four.

For Winfield (30-1), Andrea Harbin had nine points and Kristen Wilson added eight.
