WINFIELD — Despite recovering two fumbles on defense and one on special teams, the Carbon Hill Bulldogs fell to the Winfield Pirates 33-12 on Friday night at Estes Hudson Stadium.

The Pirates scored on their first two drives of the game.

Winfield quarterback Joseph Estes tossed one touchdown to Logan Pollard and ran the other one in himself. The Bulldogs recovered fumbles on the Pirates’ next two drives, turning the second one into an offensive score on an eight yard pass from Clay Tittle to Zack Lawhorn with 1:46 left in the first half to cut the lead 14-6. However, Winfield added another touchdown run in by Estes to take a 20-6 lead into halftime.

Winfield’s Joshua Rodriguez ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game out of reach, extending the lead to 33-6. With 2:46 remaining in the game, Kaleb Lawrence’s 2 yard touchdown run capped off a 15 play drive that consumed most of the fourth quarter.

Winfield outgained Carbon Hill in yardage 426-133 on the night.

“We didn’t play very good,” said Carbon Hill coach Chavis Williams. “Winfield came out ready to play and they just hit us in the mouth. But we’ve got good things ahead of us. We’ve still got a good football team and we’re growing. We won’t panic and we’ll keep pushing forward.”

Clay Tittle went 11 of 16 for 75 yards and a score. Matthew Wallace led the Bulldogs in rushing with 12 carries for 38 yards. Zack Lawhorn led the receivers with two catches for 23 yards and a score.

Carbon Hill continues region play next Friday as they travel to Gordo.
