Blood drives scheduled in Walker County

Posted

Blood donations are desperately needed across the country right now, and many blood drives will be occurring in Walker County in the coming weeks.

Leaders with the The University of Alabama at Birmingham have repeatedly voiced the need for blood during the coronavirus outbreak, stating the blood is needed to treat those with a number of medical conditions as response to COVID-19 is straining medical facilities.

“The American Red Cross is urging hospitals to reduce blood use in an effort to maintain suitable reserves for those patients who could need a blood transfusion, such as those with cancer, sickle cell disease, undergoing emergent surgery, trauma victims or postpartum women,” Dr. Marisa Marques, director of transfusion services at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in an article on the UAB News website. “We are urging citizens to donate at this time of tremendous need.”

The American Red Cross is sponsoring a number of blood drives in Walker County over the next few months. The following is a list of upcoming American Red Cross drives in our area:

- Monday, April 20, Bevill State Community College; 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

- Wednesday, April 29, Walker Baptist Medical Center; noon to 6 p.m.

- Wednesday, July 15, First Presbyterian Church of Jasper; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Wednesday, July 22, Walker Baptist Medical Center; noon to 6 p.m.

- Wednesday, Aug. 12, Walker Baptist Medical Center; noon to 6 p.m.

A pint of blood is given during each donation, which takes about an hour, according to the American Red Cross website.

People who wish to donate blood at one of the above dates should register at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive

A statement on the American Red Cross website reads, “There is no known end date in this fight against coronavirus and the Red Cross needs the help of blood and platelet donors and blood drive hosts to maintain a sufficient blood supply for weeks to come. In times of crisis, the Red Cross is fortunate to witness the best of humanity as people roll up a sleeve to help those in need.”
