Black Rock burger named ‘Bama’s Best’

Posted

October is Beef Month in Alabama and, in honor of that, one Jasper restaurant’s hamburgers were chosen as the best in Alabama.

On Monday, Black Rock Bistro’s Alabama Burger was named “Bama’s Best Burger” by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association.

Greg Kilgore, who owns Black Rock with his wife Lindsey, said it was actually a customer who nominated them for the award.

This is the best burger contest’s first year and, Kilgore said, “I think they had a little over 1,000 entries.”

Entries began being submitted in late July then the “Elite 8” were announced and online voting began. After voters had chosen the top four — the “Fiery 4” — anonymous judging began, with judges traveling to the selected restaurants and tasting the nominated burgers.

“They send out people from the Cattlemen’s Association, secretly, to taste the burger and that’s how they decide the winner,” Kilgore said.

He added that he’s really happy their burger won, noting that “I love the Cattlemen’s Association and I love beef.”

Black Rock grinds their meat in-house and uses their own special grind for the Alabama Burger, which is topped with housemade pimento cheese, mayonaise and fried green tomatoes.

“We came up with this burger about six years ago. We were looking for a signature dish for lunch. ... It’s simplistic and kind of different from a normal burger,” Kilgore explained. “The flavors really play well together, it’s a really awesome burger. There’s a little bit of heat from the jalapeno, crunchiness in the bite of the green tomato. It’s a solid burger.”

He added that it’s one of Black Rock’s best selling burgers.

Even still, “Since this contest has been going on, our burger sales are up probably 30 percent.”

He said that people have come from all over the state of Alabama — “Cullman, Huntvsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa” — as well as from out of state to eat at Black Rock.

“I’m having people now, because we’re so highly rated on Trip Advisor and this kind of stuff, who are purposely coming through Jasper just to stop and eat here. That makes me really happy,” Kilgore added.

Black Rock Bistro is located in downtown Jasper at 313 19th Street West.
