Bishop, Spin Doctors to headline Foothills 2017

Officials with the annual Foothills Festival have announced several bands performing at this year’s event, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, in downtown Jasper.

Bonnie Bishop, a country rock singer-songwriter from Texas, will headline the Friday night performances. Bishop played the Foothills Festival in 2014 and 2015.

“I just love that small town atmosphere. There’s nothing more Southern than a Friday night with a big stage set up on the town square. It was such a good feeling,” Bishop told the Daily Mountain Eagle before her 2015 performance in Jasper.

Joining Bishop on Friday night will be 1970s Texas-based rock band Shotgun.

Spin Doctors, a 1990s rock band known for their hits “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” will headline the Saturday performances. Other acts signed so far for Saturday include:

• North Mississippi All Stars, a Grammy-nominated southern rock/blues band from Hernando, Miss., which has opened for Robert Plant and Dave Matthews Band, as well as serving as the house band on “Last Call with Carson Daly” in 2004.

• Muddy Magnolias, a rock band from Nashville formed in 2014. The group led by the duo of Jessy Wilson and Kallie North have played with Gary Clark Jr., Zac Brown Band and Kid Rock. In 2016, they played festivals including the Hangout Fest, Lollapolooza and Austin City Limits.

“I am very excited about the lineup for the 2017 Foothills Festival,” said Tana Collins, Path to the Foothills coordinator and former overall festival coordinator. “Zach Baker, Foothills Festival talent buyer, has done an exceptional job once again in securing top national acts to perform at this year’s event.”

Collins said the annual Path to the Foothills (PTTF) event, which is a summer concert series in Jasper featuring Alabama artists, is different this year because winners will be playing on the main stage at the festival.

Each PTTF concert will be held on the courthouse square in downtown Jasper with two or three entries competing for the chance to play at the festival. The concert dates for PTTF are May 20, June 17, July 15 and August 5. Each are Saturdays, with the start time for each set for 7 p.m.

Requirements to enter the Path to the Foothills competition:

• Entries should be submitted to Collins via email at pathtothefoothills@gmail.com.

• Entries must be submitted no later than Wednesday, May 3 at 5 p.m.

• At least one member of the band must reside in Alabama.

• Bands must have some original music to perform.

• Entries should include a brief band description, photos and links to any online media. Videos and recordings are encouraged.

• There is no entry fee. There will be no payment for performance.

• Include top two preferred performance dates (month) if chosen for the PTTF competition.

The Foothills Festival Committee will select participants for the summer series out of the entrants submitted.

Following the final concert in the series, voting for the participating bands will take place via a link provided on social media. Winners will be chosen from the popular vote and committee votes. Any questions should be directed to Collins at pathtothefoothills@gmail.com.
