The Jasper City Board of Education approved a bid Monday night to turf Kiro-Gambrell Field.
A bid from Warner's Athletic Construction was approved to turf the football field at a base cost of $922,777, doing away with the field's grassy surface.
The school board has discussed the possibility of turfing the field for months, due to an uneven playing surface that posed a hazard to players. Pipe erosion underneath the field caused water to saturate the playing surface, and has made it difficult to maintain a quality field.
"Anytime there's variations in the surface — whether its asphalt or grass — when water sits there, it's going to make that situation worse," Jasper High Athletics Director Jonathan Jordan told board members last May. "There are spots where you're walking and your ankle will give a certain way."
Jasper High Head Coach Bryan Moore was pleased with the board's vote Monday.
"I've had experience with that company in two different settings, and I met with both engineers today," Moore said. "It's going to be a fine product."
It was not announced when turf installation will begin.
Moore previously told board members that a turf surface would not only be beneficial to the school's football team. Other athletic groups could use the field for practice, and it could also be utilized as an outdoor event space.
