Bevill’s Brown honors group of sophomores

Posted

With the 2019 season concluded for the Bevill State Bears, head coach Angel Brown is touting the accomplishments of her sophomore class, both on and off the field.

Entering as freshmen with Brown when athletics at the college were resumed in 2018, the sophomores are the first class to serve as members of the team for two complete seasons. The group has been commended for its service to the community, leadership inside the college and the positive impressions they have left through volunteer work to young softball players through camps and tournaments.

“I’m so very proud of this group — every one of our sophomores is leaving the program with a degree, or in one case, moving on to a four-year college through a transfer. I’m beyond excited for them. They came and bought into the program and really helped establish a culture that we can continue to grow on,” Brown said. “They helped lay the foundation in getting Bevill State sports back to where it was.”

Another key aspect for Brown that the sophomores established was in mentoring the freshman class and helping the young players both on and off the field.

“I can’t speak to the level of leadership our sophomore girls showed — it doesn’t do it justice. Since the first day with the team, they saw how things should be done and passed that on to the freshmen,” Brown said. “If there were questions about classes, the daily routines of practices — the sophomores were the first ones to step in and give the freshmen direction. I’ve seen the sophomores studying with the freshmen, offering advice about their first year in college, as well as helping them out on the field. In terms of importance, our sophomores were a vital key.”
