The Bevill State Bears concluded their regular season on Monday night with a 89-67 victory over the Marion Military Institute Tigers in Marion.

Latrell Tate led the Bears with 28 points, while Korri Edwards scored 21 points. Nelson Haskin had 10 points, Grant Perry scored nine points, Walter Garfield had eight points with seven assists and Javon Duncan contributed 12 assists. In an outstanding rebounding performance Martez Brown collected 20 boards along with eight points.

Bevill State (17-10) took a 44-32 lead into the half, with Edwards leading the Bears with 14 points, while Tate had 11 points. The Bears outscored the Tigers 45-35 in the second half to secure the 89-67 win.

Bevill State’s 11-3 record in the Alabama Community College Conference North Division is its best since the program was restarted in the 2017-18 season. The Bears had won just eight conference games over the previous two seasons.

Several of the team’s players ended the season highly ranked in several statistical categories.

Tate is first overall in the ACCC in points per game at 25.8, as well as free-throw shooting at 86.7 percent and is eighth in three-point shooting at 41.8 percent. Haskin was the conference’s top rebounder at 10.5 boards a game, second in blocks at 3.2 per game and seventh in steals 1.5 per game. Duncan was second in assists at 6.5 per game and fourth in steals at 1.8 per contest. Garfield’s 3.7 assists per game ranked ninth in the ACCC.

Bears to face Chattahoochee Valley in ACCC Tournament opener

The conference released the opening matchups for next week’s ACCC Tournament at Shelton State, with the Bears occupying the North Division’s second-place spot.

Bevill State will open Wednesday’s action against the Chattahoochee Valley Pirates at 1 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.

The Pirates, the South Division’s fourth-place team, finished the season with a conference record of 10-4 and 19-9 overall. Chattahoochee Valley’s top scorer is Tyler Willoughby with 13.6 points per game and fourth in free-throws at 84 percent.

The last meeting between the two teams was in Feb. 2018 in a 76-62 Pirates win.

ACCC Tournament play-in games will be held Friday with Bishop State playing at Snead State and Wallace State-Hanceville traveling to Central Alabama-North.

Men’s quarterfinals follow on Wednesday with the semifinals set for Thursday and the championship game on Friday.
