SUMITON — Sumiton Christian had no answer for Decatur Heritage’s offense on Friday as the visiting Eagles swept their Class 2A second-round playoff series at Blair Field.

Decatur Heritage won a 13-11 decision in a back-and-forth opener and finished off Sumiton Christian with a 14-4, five-inning win in game two.

Sumiton Christian’s starting pitchers allowed 15 runs on the day — with errors playing a significant role.

The Eagles stuck with Decatur Heritage until the final out in the opener. Decatur Heritage controlled game two from the start, ending the game early thanks to a six-run fifth inning.

Game 1

Decatur Heritage 13, Sumiton Christian 11

In the first game, the teams were tied at 8-8 going into the 7th inning.

Fourth-ranked Decatur Heritage struck for five unearned runs — all with two outs — in the top of the inning. The visiting Eagles took advantage of two costly errors to take a 13-8 lead.

Sumiton Christian scored three runs without recording a hit in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to two runs before a strikeout ended the rally.

Sumiton Christian led 4-2 after three innings after a Jake Jones bases-loaded double drove in three runs. After Decatur Heritage scored four runs in the top of the fourth for a 6-4 lead, Garrett Potts put Sumiton Christian back on top at 7-6 with a two-run double.

Decatur Heritage (23-6) pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth and the Eagles drew even at 8-8 on a Josh Marshall bunt single that scored Sam Dixon in the bottom of the inning.

For Sumiton Christian (17-13), Jones was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Dixon was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Jarrett McLain was 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI, Marshall was 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, CJ Bunn was 1 for 4 with three runs and an RBI, Joe Hicks was 1 for 4 with a run, Potts was 1 for 5 with a double and three RBIs and both Griffin Myers and Corbin Hicks scored a run.

Isaiah Wright started the game, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings.

McLain went one inning, giving up one run on a hit and a walk. Dixon went the final two innings and took the loss, giving up five unearned runs on five hits and two walks.

Game 2

Decatur Heritage 14, Sumiton Christian 4, 5 innings

Decatur Heritage jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Sumiton Christian cut the gap to 3-2 in the top of the second, but the visiting Eagles struck for three more in the bottom of the inning for a 6-2 advantage.

Decatur Heritage led 8-3 after four innings.

For the Eagles, Bunn was 1 for 2 with a solo home run, Dixon and Myers each finished 1 for 2 with a run, McLain was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Jones was 1 for 3 with a run and Potts was 1 for 2.

Joe Hicks took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on three hits and six walks with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. McLain went 2/3 innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout. Myers went 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on three hits and two walks.
