Bankhead recognized for STEM certification

Posted

In early December, the Walker County Board of Education recognized a recent accomplishment by Bankhead Middle School.

Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joel Hagood presented a certificate of achievement to Bankhead Middle Principal Amber Freeman at a school board meeting on Dec. 12, in light of Bankhead being the first STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) certified school in Walker County Schools.

After a two-day visit from Cognia, an education organization that offers a number of support services for schools (including certification), Bankhead was named an Internationally Certified STEM School on Dec. 11.

"Applied content, critical thinking, those types of concepts are very prevalent at Bankhead Middle School," Hagood said. "There's a constant application of those STEM concepts and a culture of STEM that exists there. What an honor to have that acknowledgment through Cognia."

Being a STEM certified school is a significant mark of achievement and recognizes Bankhead is one of the top schools in the country where students can experience STEM applications in the classroom.

Bankhead is one of few middle schools that has earned STEM certification and is among fewer than 30 schools in Alabama with the distinction.  There are fewer than 250 international certified STEM schools worldwide.

Bankhead Middle School was also recognized at the meeting for having the highest attendance of any county school in November. Curry Middle School tied with Bankhead for high attendance last month.
