Two-time defending state softball champion Sumiton Christian opens the season as the team to beat in Class 1A.

The Eagles hold down the No. 1 spot in Class 1A in the Alabama Sports Writers Association's softball/baseball poll released on Wednesday night.

Sumiton Christian (7-2) won back-to-back state titles in Class 2A before dropping to Class 1A this season.

Brantley, which has won the last three Class 1A state championships, is the No. 2 team.

Sumiton Christian is one of four local teams - two softball and two baseball - in this season's inaugural poll. The Eagles defeated Jefferson Christian 15-0 in three innings on Wednesday.

In Class 4A, the Cordova (11-2-1) softball team is ranked No. 8. The Blue Devils defeated Carbon Hill 11-3 on Wednesday and host Sumiton Christian at 4 p.m. today.

Two other area softball teams - Corner (14-6) in Class 5A and Carbon Hill (7-4) in Class 4A - were also nominated, but landed outside of the top 10.

A pair of area baseball teams are also ranked. The ASWA took note of Oakman's fast start. The Wildcats (11-3) open the season at No. 4 in Class 3A.

In Class 1A, Sumiton Christian (8-2) holds down the No. 9 spot. Sumiton Christian is the only area school that has both its softball and baseball teams ranked in the poll.

Two other baseball teams finished just outside the rankings - Walker (10-3) in Class 6A and Curry (8-5) in Class 5A.
