Alabama Power is closing 40 businesses offices around the state, including two in Walker County.
The offices in Dora and Carbon Hill are expected to close by July 31, according to Alabama Power spokesperson Danielle Kimbrough. Alabama Power's timetable for closing all 40 offices is Aug. 30.
The decision was based on a decline in traffic as customers have made the switch to paying their bills online or at one of the authorized payment locations established by Alabama Power at local retailers.
"Those authorized payment locations are places like Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar — places where people live, work and shop. They find those locations to be very convenient, obviously, so we've seen less traffic in the businesses office and more traffic either online or visiting those payment locations. The way customers do business with us has changed, so we're trying to meet their needs and preferences," Kimbrough said.
After the closure, customers who currently pay their bills at the Dora or Carbon Hill offices can either visit Alabama Power's Jasper office, pay by phone or find an authorized payment location near them.
"There are at least five authorized payment locations within a five-mile radius of most of the offices," Kimbrough said.
Customers can search for alternative locations near them on Alabama Power's website.
In Dora, the site lists Dollar Generals on Sharon Boulevard and Highway 78 as well as Horse Creek Boulevard in Cordova,First Bank of Jasper's Dora office, Walgreens and Walmart within the five-mile radius.
Options for Carbon Hill residents are more limited. Only the Dollar General in Carbon Hill is within the five-mile radius. The Dollar General in Nauvoo is two miles outside the radius, and all other payment locations are in Jasper.
Appliances are still for sale at the two offices. Any appliances not sold by the closing date will be moved to other locations.
The Jasper office is currently in a temporary location but fully serving customers’ needs.
A permanent building is expected to open in the first quarter of 2020.
