A Polar Express

Students at T.R. Simmons Elementary School in Jasper had planned on a special train ride Friday morning, but a weather event made their trip on the Polar Express something they will long remember.

With snow falling down, each class at the school took a trip around the facility in a train. Students yelled “Merry Christmas” as they began their ride at the front of the school. Some students sang Christmas carols, while others simply enjoyed the scenery, as Jasper became a winter wonderland due to more than an inch of snow accumulation.

“Many of these students probably don’t have any memories of the last time it snowed here,” Principal Jonathan Allen said. “This will be something they may never forget.”

The Polar Express Day had been planned at the school for months, but the snowfall proved to be an added treat.

“It really is a Polar Express,” Allen said. “This is neat for the students and for our faculty and staff.”

Driving the train was Christy McLemore, the school’s computer lab aide.

“I love this,” she said. “I’ve got 25 classes and just finished with the first one, but this is going to be so much fun for the students. I don’t think the cold will even bother me.”

As a part of the day, classes had Polar Express related assignments and watched the animated film. Several teachers also allowed their classes to go play in the snow.

“I was afraid the snow might stop falling or melt, so we came out early to play,” said Stacy Flanary, a first-grade teacher at the school. “The children are having a great time.”

While Jasper students were in school on Friday, the school system did release early at 1:30 p.m.
