The driver, Kathy Richey, 49, of Sumiton, approached a road block set up by Dora police to divert traffic away from a structure fire on Sharon Boulevard. When Dora Officer Jared Hall recognized her as someone wanted in connection with a theft at Glover Drug Store earlier in the week, he attempted to place her under arrest.
Hall said that Richey then drove away, almost hitting him with her car. Hall pursued the suspect down Sharon Boulevard toward Highway 78. A Sumiton officer, coming to assist Hall, was allegedly run off the road and almost struck by the suspect as she fled.
The two officers followed the suspect until she turned on Hollis Goodwin Road. The officers determined the suspect was exceeding safe speeds for the road.
“We broke off the chase in the interest of officer and public safety,” Sumiton Assistant Police Chief Scott Karr said. “But, as the officers continued down that road to return to the city, they came upon the car wrecked with the suspect inside.”
Richey apparently ran through the stop sign at the end of the road, crossed Bankhead Hwy and struck a tree. Officers called Sumiton Fire and Rescue and Bagley Fire and Rescue for medical assistance, and Richey was transported to UAB Medical Center by Regional Paramedical Services.
Police recovered the original items stolen from Glover Drug in the vehicle, as well as a number of items that appeared to be stolen.
“Those items were collected as evidence,” Dora Police Chief John Duchock said. “Sumiton and Dora police are working jointly to determine if that property is stolen, and, if so, to return it to the rightful owners.”
Richey will be charged by the city of Dora with reckless driving, resisting arrest, attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless endangerment and third-degree theft of property. She will also be charged by the city of Sumiton with additional charges of reckless driving, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude law enforcement. There may be additional charges pending further investigation. The wreck report will be handled by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
