Jennifer Williams Smith, council representative for District 4, said the appointment was neccessary due to the resignation of current board member Pat Nelson earlier this week.
Nelson said his term was expiring soon and thought stepping down now would allow his successor the ability to “hit the ground running” on several important projects, including the construction of a new Walker High School.
“Walker is a friend, and he will be a great addition to the city’s school board,” Nelson said.
Jasper Schools Superintendent Robert Sparkman said he’s excited for Wilson to join the board.
“Pat Nelson has done a great job on our board, and I believe Walker Wilson will pick up right where he left off,” Sparkman said. “Walker has children who are students in our schools. He’s going to do what is best for the children of Jasper. We’ll have a short orientation and he’ll step right in.”
The Jasper City Board of Education’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m.
In other action:
•Danny Gambrell, District 2 council member, asked if the city could provide a list of boards and when terms for each board member expire.
“I think that would be a good idea,” Gambrell said. “That way we will know exactly when a term is expiring.”
•Smith announced the Foothills Festival, which was scheduled for May 3-4, will now be in September.
“When we get exact information, we will pass it along to the public,” she said.
