Outgrowing your clothes could be considered a problem for most, but outgrowing a business facility and having to upgrade would be considered a blessing.

White Pepper Real Estate President Carol Alexander and her business partner, Vice President Brian Alexander, who is also her son, are happy they had to move their agency to its new location.

“We just outgrew the other building, and we needed more space,” Carol said. “It’s a great problem to have.” 

White Pepper began in 2002 with Carol and Charlotte Pugh as owners. Carol’s son Brian joined the team in 2004 and became a partner in 2010. Pugh is still an agent at White Pepper, but she is also a “best friend,” Carol said.

The name of the company “White Pepper” was thought of by Pugh’s husband. The two ladies wanted something unique that stood out to the community, and they didn’t want to be cliche and use the thier family names.

“We were trying to be different. It was two old ladies going out on their own,” Carol laughed. “White pepper is a spice. It’s a cut above, and we wanted to be that cut above in our service.” 

Brian added, “It’s unique. ... We wanted it to be a more personal experience rather than just some business.” 

Carol has been in the real estate field for 30 years, and she says business is booming. However, business wasn’t great during the 2009-2010 season when the economy was at its lowest since the Great Depression. But, the company is now No. 1 in sales as a producing agency. Brian said they have raked in $25 million in sales just this year.

“It’s been a very good year,” Carol said. “During 2009 and 2010, there were a lot of people that turned their licenses back in. Not with us, but a lot of people did. ... We still weathered that storm. Our market never got so bad here like it did in a lot of areas throughout the United States.” 

“Honestly, since inception, from 2003 through last year we have been the No. 1 producing company in this listing service,” Brian commented.

Sales are going well, according to the Alexanders. There have not been a lot of foreclosures in the Walker County area as compared to bigger cities. The prices have continued to remain stable.

The company not only has sales in Walker County but in surrounding counties also such as Winston, Cullman and Marion. Smith Lake properties are being purchased as well. Brian said, “Smith Lake has been one of the best kept secrets for a long time, but it’s not that great of a secret anymore.” People from all over the world are buying on the lake. For example, the Alexanders had one client from Alaska and another where they had the currency changed over to US dollars.

“You’d be amazed at the different walks of life and the different areas people are from that are now on Smith Lake,” Brian said.

“It’s amazing,” Carol added.

It is a gift to be able to help others find a home in Walker County, according to Carol, but one of the most important things that is close to the heart of the owners is being able to give back to the community through service.

“We are huge in community service. That is very important to us,” Carol said. “That’s more important to us than anything we can sell. We want to continue to be the best.” 

“We want to see Jasper and Walker County flourish. We’re very excited about some of the things we’re hearing that could be happening here, and we just really want to see those things take off,” Brian said. “We’re always going to be involved in the community, and we’re always going to be striving to do better and be better.”
