Smith leads No. 8 Carbon Hill past Oakman

OAKMAN — Carbon Hill had trouble scoring Thursday night against Oakman with one exception — Gerald Smith.

Smith scored seven of the Bulldogs’ first nine points and finished with a game-high 22 as Carbon Hill picked up a 46-37 victory over the Wildcats.

Carbon Hill needed nearly four minutes to get on the scoreboard.

Ryan Simerly put the Bulldogs up 2-0 at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter.

Oakman held a slim 5-4 lead after a Quinton Harris basket at the 1:10 mark, but Smith followed with a driving layup and a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 9-5 Carbon Hill lead.

The Wildcats didn’t get any closer the rest of the game.

Carbon Hill took a 21-15 lead into the half. Oakman kept things close early in the third quarter, cutting the gap to 21-17 after Harris scored on a putback.

The Bulldogs followed with a 17-5 run that put Oakman away.

Isaac Slaton started the spurt with a pair of free throws, Jon Bray followed with a basket and Daniel Woodard knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 28-17 at the 5:14 mark.

After Oakman got scores from Purvis Coger and Harris, Carbon Hill’s Smith knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing and went coast-to-coast for another score.

Smith closed the run with yet another 3-pointer for a 38-22 lead.

Carbon Hill led 40-24 after three quarters.

Smith, who didn’t play in the fourth quarter, had 22 points, Woodard added seven points — all in the second half, Slaton had six points, Bray put in four, Garrett Kirkland, Stevie Simerly and Ryan Simerly each had two points and Chandler Gann added one.

Carbon Hill (18-8) hosts Curry today for Senior Night and plays at Sulligent on Monday.

For Oakman (12-10), Eli Farley had 10 points, Harris had nine, Matt Wright added eight, both Case Key and Ashton Gay had four and Coger put in two.

The Wildcats play at Berry today and host Northside on Monday.

VARSITY GIRLS

Carbon Hill 59, Oakman 24

Carbon Hill held Oakman to six points over the second and third quarters en route to a 59-24 road win over the Wildcats on Thursday.

The Bulldogs, who have won 12 straight games, held a slim 15-9 lead after the opening quarter, but held Oakman to just three points in the second quarter for a 27-12 halftime lead. Carbon Hill led 45-15 after three quarters.

Savanna Lawson led the Bulldogs (22-5) with 16 points, Caroline Dodd put in 14, Abby Tittle added 10, Lindsay Fluker had nine, Meagan Bice had six and Molli Clark added four points.

For Oakman, Lindsey Harbison finished with 15 points.

VARSITY BOYS

Curry 64, Vinemont 60

Curry’s foursome of Jaxon Aaron, Jarrod Owens, Spencer Fikes and Wesley Key combined for 60 points and helped the Yellow Jackets battle back from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat Vinemont 64-60 on Thursday at Curry High School.

The Yellow Jackets got a measure of revenge with the victory. Vinemont won the first meeting 84-68 at Vinemont.

On Thursday, Curry got off to a hot start, leading 19-11 after the opening quarter and 35-29 at the break. Vinemont held Curry to just 10 points in the third quarter to take a 47-45 into the fourth quarter.

Curry made just four 3-pointers on the night, but got a big boost from Aaron, who was 9 of 10 from the floor and finished with 19 points. Owens added 16 points, Fikes had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Key added 11 points and nine rebounds and Alex Odom added four points.

Garrett Sipe had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Vinemont.

Curry plays at Carbon Hill today.

VARSITY GIRLS

Vinemont 52, Curry 40

Curry put 22 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but had trouble scoring over the final three quarters as Vinemont picked up the come-from-behind 52-40 win on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets led 22-13 after the opening quarter. Vinemont cut the gap to 28-24 at the half and took command in the third quarter by outscoring Curry 16-3 for a 40-31 lead.

For Curry, Mary Beth Scott had 12 points, Ashlee Swindle added nine, Kaylee Horton put in seven, Olivia Smith had four and both Emily Aaron and Taylor Black added three.

For Vinemont, Jordan Melton hit 5 of 6 3-pointers and finished with 25 points.

VARSITY GIRLS

Lynn 50, Berry 35

Lynn scored just one point in the opening quarter, but rebounded for 20 points in the second quarter Thursday night at Berry.

The Bears (25-1) controlled the game from there, on their way to a 50-35 victory.

Berry held a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter. Lynn led 21-8 at the half and 36-21 after three quarters.

Dodd led Lynn with 19 points and six rebounds, Brooklyn Beck added nine points, Lindsay Tompkin had eight points and 15 rebounds, Reagan Tittle had eight points, five rebounds and five assists and Emma Easley had four points.

Lynn hosts Hubbertville today.

VARSITY BOYS

Lynn 48, Berry 47

Lynn’s Kyle Medeiros knocked down 4 of 4 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points as the Bears earned a narrow 48-47 win at Berry on Thursday night.

The Bears led 8-5 after the opening quarter and 22-15 at the half.

Berry charged back to take a 34-33 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Ben Cagle and Jeremy Tittle each finished a double-double for Lynn (8-14). Cagle had 13 points and 14 rebounds while Tittle had 11 points and 11 boards.
