Richard Emanuel Alvis, 90, of Eldridge, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in the Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper. Mr. Alvis was born on Nov. 27, 1922 in Walker County, a son of Alex Newton Alvis and Sarah Nesmith Alvis; resident of Birmingham until moving to Eldridge in 1982. He retired from the Birmingham News with 33 years of service. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army where he earned four bronze stars. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and a member of Fern Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard D. Alvis; and a sister, Geneva Alvis.

He is survived by his wife, Ellie Alvis of Eldridge; a daughter, Katie Lewis of Birmingham; two stepsons, Morse Craig of Eldridge and Chuck Craig of Missouri; grandchildren, Kasey Lewis and Michael Lewis and his wife, Anita; several great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Sweeney of Huntsville and Emogene Nuckols of Eldridge.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 12 p.m. at the Fern Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Colburn Cemetery with Bro. C.R. Hood officiating.
