Pernie Mae Avery King, 87, of Jasper, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.

Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, from noon until 2 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Collins-Burke Chapel. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Leroy Anthony will officiate.

Pernie Mae King was born on Aug. 11, 1926, to the late Edgar C. and Pernie Mae Lankford Avery. She attended Sanford University, previously known as Howard College, where she received her bachelors degree in education. She later went on to attend the University of Alabama where she received her master of arts degree in library science. She was employed by Jasper City School System for 30 years where she retired having 30 years of educating, as she stated many times, some of Jasper’s finest. She was an outstanding member of the community and very proud of her accomplishment bringing the first library to what is now Maddox Middle School. A member of many clubs and organizations, she dedicated her life to serving others.

She is preceded by her husband, Thomas Jordan King; her daughter, Nancy Elizabeth King; sisters, Dorothy Avery, Sue Avery Edwards and Janet Avery; and one brother, Edgar C. Avery II.

She is survived by her sisters, Thomasine Avery Brown and Elizabeth Avery Prado; brother-in-law, Dr. William M. Prado; and granddaughter, Lauren Kristen Chambers. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues that will miss her dearly.
