Parrish, Curry, Meek lose region road games

BRILLIANT — The Parrish Tornadoes fell in Brilliant friday night, 51-6.

The Tornadoes were still without several players due to injuries, and Brilliant took full advantage.

Brilliant opened the scoring after recovering a pooch kick to start the game. Seth Nelson scored on an eight-yard run with 10:12 remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Chance Key converted the two point conversion giving Brilliant the early lead 8-0.

Brilliant scored again after holding Parrish, when Heath Martin scored on a five-yard run. The two-point conversion was also converted as Chance Key passed to Ron Sutliffe. The Tigers were up 16-0 with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Brilliant recovered another onside kick but were unable to advance as Parrish held on fourth down.

After a 64-yard run by Spencer Piper deep into Brilliant territory, the Tigers defense stiffened and held Parrish on downs.

The Tigers (4-3) scored again on the last play of the first quarter when Chance Key ran 35 yards to pay dirt. A pass from Key to Seth Nelson converted the two-point conversion giving the Tigers a 24-0 lead at the end of one quarter of play.

Brilliant's defense scored to open the scoring in the second quarter when they returned a lateral 60 yards for the touchdown. Jeramy Davis converted the conversion and the Tigers were up 31-0 with 11:33 remaining before halftime.

Nelson ran 45 yards for another score with 8:35 remaining in the second quarter. Davis converted the extra point and the Tigers were up 38-0.

Brilliant scored on a 48-yard screen pass from Key to Nelson. Davis again converted the extra point and the Tigers were up 45-0 with 4:49 left before the half.

The Tornadoes got on the board with 4:18 left when Reid Robertson connected with Reggie Harris for a 69-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed and Parrish trailed 45-6. After the Tigers returned the kickoff deep into Parrish territory, Dawson Cotton connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Davis, putting Brilliant up 51-6 at the half.

There was no scoring in the second half as the defenses dominated.

The Tornadoes were led in rushing by Spencer Piper who had seven rushes for 85 yards. Reggie Harris added 16 yards on six carries and also had one reception for 69 yards and a touchdown. Reid Robertson was 2-12 for 68 yards and 1 TD.

The Tornadoes (1-6, 1-4) will host Lynn next week in a region game.



At Pinson, running back Nick Gibson scored four touchdowns, and Pinson Valley scored more points than it ever has in school history with a 74-0 victory over Curry.

With the win, the Indians improve to now 4-3 overall, 3-2 in Class 5A, Region 6.

Gibson scored on runs of 24, 93, 12 and 3 yards in the game. Pinson Valley led 27-0 after the first quarter and 55-0 at the half.

Curry has given up an average of 59.5 points during its six-game losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets have lost 16 straight region games dating back to 2011.

Curry (1-6, 0-5) hosts Moody next week.



At Ragland, the Purple Devils won their fifth straight game, beating the Meek Tigers 46-8 in their Class 1A, Region 6 matchup.

For Meek, which is 0-6 in region play this season, Ty Griffith scored the lone touchdown while Keeton Cleghorn caught a two-point conversion from quarterback Seth Hayes.

Meek’s next two games come against teams who are a combined 2-10 — Southeastern and Shades Mountain Christian.

The Tigers host Southeastern next week.
